For twenty years the game was clear: rank on Google's first page, get the click. Two things broke that model. First, search engines started answering directly on the results page. Second, millions of people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity instead of searching at all. That is where two new acronyms come from — and no, they are not hype invented to sell you services.
The three-layer definition
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization): being findable and rankable in classic search results. Still the foundation — everything else builds on it.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): being the answer — in featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants. The user may never click; your brand wins by being cited.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): being present in what generative AI says — when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what tool should I use for X" or "who does Y in Miami", your business is part of the answer.
What actually changed (with honesty about what nobody knows)
The measurable shift: a growing share of searches end without a click, because the answer appears on the page. And AI assistants do not show ten blue links — they synthesize a handful of sources and often name just one or two brands.
Now the honest part: nobody outside these companies knows exactly how generative engines pick their sources, and anyone selling you "guaranteed #1 in ChatGPT" is lying. What we do know from observation: generative engines lean on content that is crawlable, factual, well-structured, recently updated, and corroborated across several independent sources. That list is actionable.
What to do, in order
- 1. Fix classic SEO first. If crawlers cannot read your site cleanly, no engine — classic or generative — can cite you. Technical health is the entry ticket.
- 2. Write citable content. Direct answers to real questions, with verifiable facts, dates, and a named author. Vague marketing prose never gets quoted.
- 3. Use structured data. Schema markup (Organization, Article, FAQ) tells machines exactly what your pages claim.
- 4. Build corroboration. Mentions of your brand in directories, press, reviews and other people's content are what generative engines cross-check against.
- 5. Monitor what the engines say. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your category and your brand monthly, and track how the answers change.

Is SEO dead?
No — it changed jobs. Classic SEO is now the foundation that makes AEO and GEO possible: engines cannot answer with, or recommend, what they cannot crawl and trust.
Can anyone guarantee me a spot in ChatGPT's answers?
No. There is no submission form and no paid placement. What exists is a set of practices that measurably raise your odds — the five steps above.
Does this apply to businesses in Venezuela and Latin America?
Especially — Spanish-language niches have far less optimized competition, so the businesses that structure their content first tend to become the answer for their whole category.
