Claude cracks Fermat's Last Theorem and Europe finally reaches orbit

Claude formalizes Fermat's Last Theorem in 11 days

  • Anthropic's Claude produced a complete formal verification in Lean of Fermat's Last Theorem — unsolved for 358 years until Andrew Wiles's 1995 proof — generating 30,000+ supporting theorems and about 13 million lines of code in 11 days of mostly autonomous work.
  • Mathematician Kevin Buzzard of Imperial College London, who leads the human formalization effort, confirmed the proof's validity; Forbes reports the run consumed roughly 6 billion output tokens.

OpenAI ships GPT-6 Astra to paying users
